Virat Kohli in ODIs: Master of the 50-Over Game
For over a decade now, Virat Kohli has set the ODI format on fire. His mentality, technique, and hunger for runs has left a significant mark on the format. Fans have dubbed him the “Chase Master” – and it’s easy to see why! He has changed the manner in which many of today’s batsmen play ODIs.
Early ODI Career
In 2008, Kohli debuted in an ODI against Sri Lanka at an age of only 19 and entered into a team filled with stars. As regards the immediate impact, there was one: in the fourth ODI, he scored 54 runs; it was important to the pursuit to win the game, and that was a first glimmer of true brilliance.
Breakthrough Years: 2010 to 2012
Over the years that ran from 2010 to 2012, Kohli cemented himself in the team and was banging out tons of runs. His 183 against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2012 is one of the best innings I’ve seen. India were chasing 330, and Kohli made it seem very easy. He had great selection of shots and looked calm in temperament.
Chase Master Tag
Kohli is a master of chasing. He plays at his best under pressure. Most of his centuries in ODIs have come while chasing a target. He has an average of over 65 in ODI chases, something no other batsman can touch. He’s not just a chaser, he is a chaser that dominates!
ODI World Cup Performances

Kohli was an instrumental player for India’s World Cup-winning side in 2011. He blasted a century against Bangladesh in the tournament’s opener and recorded good knocks in the middle order.
2015 World Cup
In the 2015 World Cup, he started strong with a century against Pakistan. Though India didn’t go beyond the semi-finals, Kohli’s presence was vital.
2019 World Cup
Kohli was the captain of the team during the 2019 World Cup. He registered five fifties in the tournament and did not score a hundred but the vital fifties kept India in control. India went through the group stages as first in the groups.
ODI Records and Achievements

Kohli vs Other ODI Legends
Kohli’s name now appears alongside other greats such as Tendulkar and Ponting. He had fewer games to get more hundreds than Ponting. In 2023, he had crossed the 49 ODI hundreds landmark of Sachin. Kohli has transformed the view on modern batting.
